Papua New Guinea's proposed three-tier high court structure is long over due. Chief Justice, Sir Salamo Injia, says the Court Restructure Bill will fill what he terms as a 'gap' in the court structure. PNG currently has a two-tier system which comprises the National and Supreme Courts. The Court Restructure Bill has already passed its first reading and there are two more readings before it becomes law. "If the amendments go through, we will have a three-tier court structure. "We will have the National Court as a trial court, and an appeal will lie with the Court of Appeal, which is a new court, and the Supreme Court will be the final court of appeal. "Each court will be serviced by permanent judges." Sir Salamo was speaking at the swearing-in of new judge Justice William Neill at Government House today. NBC/ PNGfacts
