PNG Capital Port Moresby is locked down, with police out in full force to ensure law and order is maintained. Police will not allow any protest atleast in a month.
This comes as the 24 hour deadline given by protesters to the Government on Tuesday, lapsed yesterday afternoon. The petition demanded amongst others, the resignation of Prime Minister Peter O'Neill, over the Paul Paraka Lawyers payment, and the reinstatement of the Task Force Sweep Chairman, Sam Koim, and the senior police officers suspended. Students were told not to turn up at school today, but those who did turn up, were sent home as early as nine o'clock. While leaders of the civil activist groups are holding an urgent meeting, to plan their next course of action, police have stationed themselves at strategic points throughout the city. Police presence seen at the Unagi Oval at Gordons, Jack Pidik Park at Five Mile, and at the campus gates of the University of Papua New Guinea. Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N'dranou said police will continue its operation for as long as it's required to quell any plans to cause disharmony in the city. Other centers in the country planning to protest today, have also been stopped by police. It is understood that many international activities are occurring in the country and Police won't allow disturbances to these activities. Comments are closed.
