Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has nominated Papua New Guinea's diplomat Dame Meg Taylor for the top job in the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
The next Secretary General is expected to be announced after the 45th Pacific Islands Forum meeting winds up in Koror, Palau. The announcement is expected on Thursday after the Forum Leaders Retreat. Mr O'Neill and the PNG delegation are already in Palau. Prime Minister O'Neill says Dame Meg Taylor is more than qualified for the post and has since been assured of support from the Melanesian Spearhead Group. But since this month's special MSG summit in Port Moresby, it is still unclear if the Melanesian group will push for a single candidate in Dame Meg Taylor. An official told NBC News, among the nominees are candidates from Solomon Islands and the Marshall Islands. The Secretary General's post is currently occupied by Samoa's Tuiloma Neroni Slade.
