PNG Barramandis are just one win away from qualifying for next year’s World Twenty20 tournament after beating Namibia by 25 runs at a qualifying tournament in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
Geraint Jones top-scored with a measured 36 as the Barramundi’s posted 145 for 4 batting first. All five PNG bowlers then got amongst the wickets as Namibia were dismissed for 120 in the 19th over. Radio New Zealand reports that the General Manager of Cricket PNG, Greg Campbell, was pleased with their first win against Namibia “Pipi Raho takes a huge amount. You know the guy didn’t play the first four games, comes in the last two games, gets 3 for 10, two catches and gets man of the match. We’ve probably pushed the envelope that it’s a squad of fifteen here and everyone is going to win the game, whether you’re in the eleven or you’re in the twenty. We’re fairly confident tomorrow - we know Hong Kong is going to be hard - but for the country and everything if we can make the World Cup it will change the perspective of how cricket’s played there.” Hong Kong were beaten on the last ball of their playoff match against Nepal, who secured a spot at the World Twenty20 for the first time alongside the UAE who beat the Netherlands.
