The three West Papua Activists arrested for Organising Sunday’s raising of the Morning Star flag were released this afternoon.
Acording to EMTV, the three men received overwhelming support through social media and contacts overseas, an amount of K4,900 was raised after midday today. They say the true heroes are the West Papuans that continue to be suppressed in their own land. The hearing took place at the Waigani committal court today. We caught up with the men after the hearing who looked calm and collected after being in the Boroko cell for two nights. They said they were treated well by police, and were overwhelmed by the numerous calls of support they received whilst they were under arrest. They were released on a bail of K250 each; a significant reduction from the initial amount of K10, 000. Three conditions given by the courts; include no more involvement in organising activities like Sunday’s event, for the men not to interfere with police investigations whilst it builds a case into the matter, and for the men to report to the court every two weeks. UPNG political lecturer, Patrick Kaiku, said while they were labelled heroes for their deed by supporters, he shrugged off the compliment stating it was the West Papuans that remain suppressed that are the real heroes. The case will be deliberated further on March four, next year. The K4, 900 donation received will be used to pay for legal fees. Comments are closed.
