Following the introduction and approval of the new ROAD TRAFFIC AUTHORITY, New Transport Minister, Malakai TABAR, has today announced the expectations and focus of this new body which will overlook and ensure that PNG improves its image when it comes to an effective TRANSPORT SYSTEM, especially within Port Moresby.
Some aspects which were highlighted today include the merging of all agencies like the Land Transport Board, National Road Safety Council and the Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited under one body and the better coordination of the TRANSPORT SYSTEM, following lessons learnt from the recent Melanesian Festival and in preparations for the 2015 Pacific Games. Minister TABAR also added that the Transport Department, which is spearheading these changes in the next coming months, has had a meet with the Public Motor Vehicle (PMV) Association and will be working closely together to ensure that PMV buses and TAXI drivers in are involved in adjusting to a more effective, well-coordinated and reliable transport system for city residents. The new law which was passed in Parliament in the May sitting is currently undergoing the process of being certified and gazetted before it can be implemented in the city.
