A Leadership Tribunal will begin inquiring into allegations of misconduct in office against Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, early next year.
The inquiry will be headed by a retired New Zealand judge, Sir Peter Blanchard, who begins the inquiry on January 26th, 2015. Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia yesterday announced his decision to appoint the tribunal following a request from the Public Prosecutor on November 14. Members of the tribunal are John Von Boussa (Boza), a retired Judge from the Australian Federal Court and Justice Salatiel Lenalia from P-N-G's National and Supreme Courts. The allegations of misconduct relate to the processes involved in the approval of the three billion Kina loan from the Union Bank of Switzerland to purchase shares in Oil Search Limited. Chief Justice Sir Salamo says the two imminent former judges of two developed common law jurisdictions and a senior national judge were appointed because of the importance of the high office Peter O'Neill holds. The Chief Justice said the tribunal will use its discretion to decide whether or not the Prime Minister will be suspended from office. The tribunal will start its inquiry on Monday, the 26th of January 2015, at the Waigani Court House. Comments are closed.
