Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill is confident that the country will deliver “world class” facilities when the Pacific Games is held in Port Moresby in July. “Papua New Guineans need to be proud that we are able to deliver a world class facility in record time. This is something we should take pride in,” he said. After visiting most of the Games venues yesterday, he said he was confident that the three main venues – the Games Village, Sir John Guise Stadium and the Taurama Aquatic Centre – would be completed by the deadline of May 31. He called on everyone to work hard between now and May 31 to get everything in order.
“We don’t want to have a blame-game. We want to deliver the best Games possible and Papua New Guineans should start working together for the good of our country,” he said. “You can’t compare this to facilities in Fiji or Tonga. So Papua New Guineans, take pride that you are delivering something of world-class standard, something that our future generation will use.” He said he was fed up of people “telling me that we can’t do it”. Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill led a delegation, including Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko and National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop, to visit the sites. The Games Village, to accommodate 4000 athletes and officials, has 30 buildings which are nearing completion. Project manager Jack Tipene, who is providing consultancy work at the Games Village, said the venue was 90 per cent complete. Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko said the Games Village was the best in the region and even out matched the Commonwealth Games Village in Scotland. “This is 10 times what the Commonwealth Games put up in Scotland. This is first class,” Tkatchenko said. PNG Sports Foundation chief executive officer Peter Tsiamalili Jr said once the facilities were completed, they would be handed to the Sports Foundation.
