Prime Minister Peter O' Neil is forgoing the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), to attend the second China/Pacific Island Countries' Economic Development and Cooperation Forum.
Mr. O' Neil flew out of the country today, to meet with the leaders of the People Republic of China, in Guangzhou. The Forum being hosted by China's Ministries of Commerce and Foreign Affairs, from 7th to 9th of November, is expected to draw over 500 key officials, government ministers and heads of state from around the world. The Prime Minister is being accompanied by National Planning Minister, Charles Abel and National Capital District Governor, Powes Parkop. Prime Minister O' Neil says China is currently one of the largest global economies in the world, and to have these forums with key Chinese government officials and heads of state, allows initial discussion to take place that will greatly benefit the people of PNG. He says one area, PNG needs to build is the export market. China is currently the world's second richest and the second largest importer. In 2012 alone, they imported over 1.5-trillion-US-Dollars worth of imported products. The Forum will focus on Trade and Investment, Environmental Protection, Agriculture Trade and Tourism. O' Neil says, PNG's economy stands to benefit from these discussions in both the short and mid term, and is a must they take part in these discussion, to develop the relationships and ensure we have a platform moving forward for our export market in China. Mr. O' Neil says China can also provide their knowledge, experience and support in PNG's areas of urgent needs, such as in health, education and security. He is also expected to reconnect with his Pacific neighbours like Fiji, during this meeting. Deputy Prime Minister, Leo Dion, will instead represent him at the 23rd C-H-O-G-M to be held in Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, from the 15th to 17th of this month. Comments are closed.
