PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill has ordered police and National Capital District Commission workers to knock down fences and structures that are hindering public infrastructure developments in the nation’s capital.
This is the clearest sign yet that the Government is rushing to have in place transport and other infrastructures for major international events the country will be hosting in the coming years, including the 2015 Pacific Games, "I have ordered police and NCDC to go over and knock down the fences so that we can build the road for the public. We are doing that now and we are not apologising to anyone." Mr O’Neill said. "Those who are building things on public property are doing it at their own risk, the Government will not compensate you, we will clear that up so that the public can easily use the roads," Mr O’Neill said. The orders from the Prime Minister came after his meeting with the NCD Governor Powes Parkop over the delays in work on a number of major road infrastructures in the nation’s capital. Mr Parkop last week raised concerns that the proposed Kookaburra Road construction will not be completed on time for the 2015 Pacific Games if there is more delay from the residents living on the proposed routes. There have also been concerns raised to the city authorities about structures being erected along the proposed new roads that would help ease traffic congestion in the city.
