The Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has called on all Papua New Guinea’s leading diplomats to stay focused and work collectively to portray a strong and progressive image of the nation. Speaking to a meeting of the Heads of Mission from Papua New Guinea’s high commissions, embassies and consulates, PM O’Neill said diplomats must also continue to engage meaningfully to ensure the Government is aware of changes taking place in the region around the world. “The global economy is in a difficult situation right now with fluctuating commodity prices and a slowdown in China, and this has implications in many of our trading partners,” the Prime Minister told the meeting. “Our diplomats are best placed to ensure that the Government is aware of challenges around the world, and to represent our our national interests abroad. “Our Government is undertaking engaging and meaningful relations with our foreign partners around the world and building stronger friendships. “As our diplomats you need to believe in yourselves, stay focused and work collectively,” the Prime Minister said to the Heads of Missions. “For all of us, our number one priority is to serve the best interest of our country and you are representing your country with pride. “You all have the experience and expertise to deal with the issues that arise in the missions you are leading, and to yield the best outcomes.” PM O’Neill also highlighted the need for a proper Foreign Policy review. “A full review of our nation’s foreign policy is long overdue. “With your experience and the expertise of senior public servants in the Department, I expect this process to conclude soon. “With major foreign policy events occurring in Papua New Guinea such as APEC, and with our growing business engagement in places such as France, we need to have clear vision of our way forward on foreign affairs engagement. “Let us work together in getting this review in place,” PM O’Neill said. At the conclusion of the meeting, that took place in Port Moresby on Friday, the Prime Minister said the forum for heads of overseas missions should become an annual event and take place alongside the Leaders’ Summit. The next Leaders’ Summit is due to take place in early 2017 at the International Convention Centre.
