THE Government has announced plans to upgrade certain towns and cities in the country when handing down the 2014 Budget yesterday.
This is to boost economic development in areas of commerce and industry, tourism and agriculture. Treasurer Don Polye said the Government would provide K838.6 million (including K73.9 million in donor grants and loans) in 2014 for the development of infrastructure in PNG’s four major cities of Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen and Kokopo. The infrastructure projects represent initial steps toward developing each city as a central hub in key areas of enterprise. The Government will provide K281.8 million in 2014 to develop Port Moresby into the commercial hub of the country. The key infrastructure projects for Port Moresby include new and existing roads (K170m); upgrade of Port Moresby General Hospital (K30m); and upgrade and rehabilitation of Jackson’s Airport ( K30m). The government will provide K437.4 million in 2014 to develop Lae into the industrial base of PNG. The key infrastructure projects for Lae include Lae Port Development Project (K270m); new and existing roads (K100m) and; rebuilding of Angau Hospital under the 2013 joint understanding with the Australian Government (K65.2m). Mt Hagen will become the agriculture hub of PNG with the government providing K61.4 million in 2014 to develop it. The key infrastructure projects for Mt Hagen include new and existing roads (K40m) redevelopment of Mt Hagen Hospital (K20m) and the Mt Hagen Rice Project (K1.4m). The government has also planned to develop Kokopo in East New Britain Province to be the tourism hub of the country with a funding of K58 million in 2014. Key projects for Kokopo include water and sewerage upgrades (K2 million); Tokua Airport upgrade (K15 million) and tourism master plan (K3 million). PNG Facts /Post Courier Comments are closed.
