A PETITION from the people of Central opposing the construction of the Trans-island Highway will be tabled in Parliament, Rigo MP Ano Pala says.
Pala, the Justice Minister and Attorney-General, said the petition contained the concerns of people in Central local level governments on Government’s plan to build a highway linking Port Moresby to the Highlands region and Lae. Pala said the petition would be discussed in Parliament. “The people have the right to air their grievances by way of a petition in Parliament through their members,” he said. The Government plans to build the multi-million kina highway from Port Moresby to Kerema, through the highlands and down towards Lae. The aim is to open up the country and allow people to travel by road to reach the two biggest cities. The people in Central had voiced their concern when it was announced because it would encourage the trading and easy movement of illegal items such as weapons from the highlands to the cities. Pala said the Government’s stand was that whether it agreed with it or not was immaterial but it would be debated in Parliament. Pala commended the leaders in the province for discussing ideas and issues of importance with them at the provincial assembly meeting. He said open discussions on issues affecting the people had been missing in previous year. “It is through such debates that better ways to deliver government services to the people will come up,” he said.
