More than K200 million Kina allocated to schools in the National Capital District have not been utilized properly.
According to the N-C-D Governor Powes Parkop, there's evidence of mismanagement and gross abuse of funds by the N-C-D Education board. Governor Parkop says the engagement of contractors to carry out certain school projects worth over 200- million Kina last year did not eventuate. He says that money was not even allocated to schools with little or no infrastructure development. This has prompted the Governor to call on the government to decentralize education so that all schools are controlled and managed by the N-C-D Commission. Governor Parkop says the main objective of this is to improve the quality of education starting from elementary to secondary schools. "As long as NCD goes apart with the National Department of Education, we will continue to have this problem". "So this is why I have been pressure on the Minister decentralize it quickly". "And when we take ownership of the schools in the city, we are going to drive it so that we improve the infrastructure, we improve the learning and teaching environment, we improve the teachers condition so we can start to have a quality education in our capital city".
