Despite having to temporarily suspend operations since August 2015 due to dry weather, Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) has continued to support relief efforts towards the ongoing food crisis across the Western Province. The support is directed through the Ok Tedi Development Foundation (OTDF) and its involvement on the Western Province Disaster Committee (WPDC) which first met in August 2015 to address a looming food crisis. In October the WPDC received district assessments requiring in aggregate some PGK15 million to support the 170,000 people impacted by the dry weather. OTML and the Heduru Trust responded with each donating PGK5 million to initially purchase 1,600 tonnes of rice to be delivered from Port Moresby for distribution by the WPDC. With assistance from OTDF, the WPDC recently concluded the LLG Relief Supply and Distribution Programs and met with OTDF, Australian Department of Foreign Affairs &Trade and United Nations representatives to agree on distribution from the respective District storage points. In January 2016 OTDF coordinated logistics support from companies operating in Western Province and Port Moresby and from these donor agencies. OTML has begun shipping containers to Aiambak and Kiunga ports for supply to North and Middle Fly Districts. Steamships and Consort have offered to ship the 20 containers required for the South Fly District into Daru port on their scheduled services from February. The first 115 tonnes of rice is being distributed across the Middle Fly corridor and into Lake Murray villages with the assistance of Provincial Administration officers, PNG Defence Force soldiers, OTDF, Starwest and the communities. OTML acknowledges Trukai Industries for supplying discounted prices and offering cartage from their inbound store to the OTML and Consort shipping sites for loading, and Horizon Oil for sponsoring the cartage of containers to the storage location in Kiunga.
