Papua New Guinea’s renowned Operation Open Heart, OOH, which annually handpicks unfortunate children with heart defects, has begun its first out of four trips for this year. Principally, doctors from Singapore and Australia engaged with OOH, offer unfortunate children, the life-saving opportunity to have their condition surgically rectified at the Port Moresby General Hospital. The first trip, which concludes this Friday, includes the surgical operation of 11 children that come from provinces around the country, with four successfully operated on so far. According to PNG’s only cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Noah Tapaua, OOH has successfully operated on almost one thousand patients. “Over the past twenty three years, we have treated 984 Papua New Guineans who could have died, but by the end of this week, would have successfully operated on 995.” “The program is very successful and goes back to the selection process of the team behind this – we have a pediatric team of competent doctors; the anesthetic team and the core group including the teams that take of the patients during surgery and post-surgery in the Intensive Care Unit,” Dr. Tapaua said. Dr. Tapaua says the objective of OOH over the years has been to localize all heart operations with minimum or no input from international experts. “We have started to cut down the teams that visit because we are trying to build our local capacity – this year we will have two trips each from both from Singapore and Australia, which will make four trips in 2016.” “The second, third and last trips will most likely deal with patient numbers between 10 – 15 so we endeavor to surgically operate and save around 50 children,” Dr. Tapaua said.
