Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has avoided arrest by the country's anti-corruption
watchdog after the warrant was stayed by the National Court for a day. The National Court after lunch today has adjourned the stay application by the Prime Minister for his arrest to tomorrow. The matter was adjourned to tomorrow at 9.30 to give time to lawyers for the Prime Minister to file a response to an affidavit file by Sam Koim on behalf of the Task Force Sweep and police. In a packed National Court room at Waigani the case filed by PM Lawyers seeking an urgent orders preventing his arrest was adjourned before it even started. Council representing the PM Tiffany Nonggor sought an adjournment after short service (late service) of Sam Koim's affidavit by the State's (Govt) Lawyer. She asked to first study the affidavit before making her submission. The judge accepted her request for adjournment and ordered parties return tomorrow 9:30am. They will argue their case before the judge will make a decision whether or not to grant a stay order preventing Police arresting the PM. While the matter is before the Court the Police will not pursue the arrest of the PM pending the tomorrow's ruling. Meanwhile Don Polye is on a flight back from Brisbane today and will make himself available to be interviewed over the Parakagate issue. Sources also said the assistant Commissioners of Police raise objection to Geoffrey Vaki's appointment as acting Commissioner of Police. Their reasons were due to his absence from the force since 2009 and previous alleged disciplinary charges against him. Justice Ere Kariko ordered the police to refrain from carrying out any arrest on the PM to maintain the status quo until the matter turns tomorrow for the court to further determine the issue. The PM’s lawyer Tiffany Nonggorr this morning made an urgent application before the National Court to stay a warrant of arrest that was issued yesterday. Comments are closed.
