Prime Minister Hon. Peter O’Neill is expected to officially open the temporary Jiwaka Provincial Headquarters and launch the construction of the permanent building in mid July this year.
The headquarters which is a project of the National Government has already begun on state land in Kurumul which was transferred to the Jiwaka Provincial Government. The temporary building which would house the provincial administration and government offices is expected to be completed and officially opened in July 17, the day in 2009 which than Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare declared the eastern half of Western Highlands Province which consist of North Wahgi, Anglimp South Wahgi and Jimi electorates a new province. The Prime Minister is also expected to launch the construction of the permanent four stories building by Indian firm ESSAR Ltd which is also working on the Western Highlands Provincial headquarters. In a first of its kind in the country and an advantage for the new province, the state has transferred the land titles of the Kurumul Tea plantation to the Jiwaka Provincial Government, opening the doors for internal revenue generation through leases to developers in the new township which is expected to emerge along the Highlands Highway. Though the Provincial Executive Council transparently and publicly made a decision for the location of the new headquarters to be in the centre of the province in Kurumul, certain politically motivated individuals, people’s whose claims and proposals were rejected, or those who would benefit from land titles if the headquarters was situated in either Minj or Banz, opposed the PEC decision in the media. Governor William Tongamp has spent the last couple of weeks keeping close eyes and ensuring work on the temporary headquarters was progressing and completed by July 17. The main frames for the temporary headquarters are up now. "The Prime Minister has supported and endorsed work the headquarters. The people of Jiwaka by end of July should have adequate temporary headquarter while the new nerve centre rises on the high ground nearby." DrTongamp said. Locals in Kurumul have begun experiencing a surge in economic activities with both timber and gravel for the headquarters being taken from the vicinity. Local labours are also hired by ESSAR on the new headquarters. Already a new market has emerged on the edge of the coffee plantation near the highlands highway. As the town develops, the nearby tribes are in for reaping from the spring off benefits. Comments are closed.
