Prime Minister Peter O' Neil says, NO amount of compensation will be enough to pay for the environmental damages that landowners suffer as a result of mining activities.
He says it's unfortunate that previous governments did NOT rectify the issue. But, he says his government has taken the step forward in giving part of the shares in O-T-M-L back to the landowners. Mr. O' Neil was commenting on the eighty-Kina royalty that O-T-M-L landowners collect annually. The Prime Minister also says, this includes the Papua New Guinea Sustainable development Program, which along the way has lost the plot. "That is why the government has been trying to ensure that control and the management of this institution be controlled, and the investment in the Ok Tedi Mine are given back to the people of Western Province, so that they can take charge of their own destiny and ensure that they look after their communities, their families, and off course, their environment which they need."
