BILLIONS of kina in tax payers money has been wasted, stolen or misused by state owned corporations over the last 40 years, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill told the Leaders Summit in Port Moresby yesterday.
"The time has also come for the national Government to step up to its mark and reform the way State-owned businesses and other entities operate," he said. Mr O’Neill said the history of state-owned businesses since Independence – including business that are service providers – was absolutely appalling. "Absolutely appalling – and with very few exceptions," said Mr O’Neill. He told a packed conference room of ministers, governors, heads of departments and agencies and provincial administrators at the Gateway Hotel that the collective task is to use the summit to work together to ensure that optimism becomes a reality.
