Governor General Grand Chief Sir Michael Ogio, officially opened the 5th Melanesian Festival of Arts and Culture, last night in front of a capacity crowd.
The theme of this year's event is 'Celebrating Cultural Diversity'. Sir Michael says the event is held to enhance mutual understanding, cooperation and to appreciate one another's arts, culture and music in the true Melanesian way. "Seeking Papua New Guineans, Fijians, Solomon Islanders, Vanuatu and New Caledonians especially the Kanaks speaks volumes of Melanesia. Each ways, each arts and it's culture. The diverse culture of Melanesian were original and intact". The festival will be celebrated for two weeks, with visitors having a chance to go to four satellite venues in Mount Hagen, Wewak, Alotau and Rabaul. The festival ends on 11th July.
