Freedom of expression is a fundamental right worth defending vigorously, as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
United States Ambassador to PNG Walter North, says all governments must have a commitment to uphold this fundamental freedom. He made this sentiments as the world celebrates Media Freedom Day today (Saturday 03/05/14). Mr North says, regrettably journalists have been threatened, imprisoned and even murdered for exercising this fundamental right. He further states, media freedom keeps societies and economies vibrant, energetic, and healthy, and when information is cut off, individuals, the society and a country's economy suffers.
