A RESPECTED member of the commission of higher education Mr Joseph Sukwianomb, said a number of
institutions in Lae would one day form a Lutheran University. "The signboard is a kind of an advertisement but in law, it is not a university but we are working towards that dream. Right now it is just a working office. "The commission has been helping but the problem has been on and off because of their internal challenges within the Lutheran community," Mr Sukwianomb said. The respected former UPNG academic, Mr Sukwianomb said this during the Higher Education Commission sectors meeting in Lae last week. While in Lae, the commissioners visited the site. Balob Teacher’s College is ready to kick start on a program called future education for primary schools. During the visit at the campus, Balob was recommended to run a Bachelor of Arts program and the Martin Luther Seminary to be the founding faculties of the Lutheran University of Papua New Guinea. "Now we have to review the piece of registration as fast as we can. That particular registration was not properly consulted so we have to return it. Once it gets through the parliament and certified by the speaker, then it is clearly a university." The university will then form a council. The council will have the responsibilty of appointing a vice chancellor, who will be responsible for the academic staff’s research. "In terms of timing, we should be getting it off the ground at a minimum of 12 months and the maximum time is two years," Mr Sukwianomb said. Comments are closed.
