The Papua New Guinea airline industry will soon see another player in business providing affordable service to the travelling public.
This new airline company is Link PNG and it is a subsidiary of the national flag carrier, Air Niugini Ltd. Air Niugini Board Chairman, Sir. Frederick Reiher announced this to the media today saying that the formation of the subsidiary company is part of Air Niugini restructure and will operate on a low cost carrier model, providing an affordable and safe service to travellers. “This airline is now approved by the Board with immediate commencement and it will start operation on the first of November this year,” he says. “Link PNG will be a smarter, low cost carrier that will service routes to provincial and district centres, which are currently operated by the Dash 8 classic fleet.” Its establishment will also make sure services is maintained and improve in spite of the ownership restructure that Air Niugini is going to have, and by making it a separate company, it will not be linked to whatever happens to the restructure. “Although wholly owned by Air Niugini, Link PNG will operate as an independent company with its own logo, its own board and management and its dedicated staff, who will be drawn initially from Air Niugini’s existing employees under an interim arrangement to be agreed between the two companies,” says the Chairman. Meanwhile, Captain Daniel Wanma of Air Niugini has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Link PNG along with a management team approved by the Board. The company will be using seven existing Air Niugini Dash 8 air craft that will be converted to the company’s logo and will also have its own separate office.
