Investigations are underway to determine whether a mysterious pig disease in Enga province is a threat to humans.
Health, quarantine and livestock officials are probing the pig deaths, which has caused fear among people. It cannot be established at this point the cause or name of the disease, but authorities and locals have called it an outbreak of pig disease. More than seven pigs have died in the affected area in Laigaip-Porgera district, and the disease is fast spreading to neighbouring villages. A veterinarian is taking blood samples from dead pigs for testing. Workers from the provincial Department of Primary Industry have carried out mass vaccination of pigs. Villagers say they are scared, adding that pigs are their main source of income. Authorities have strongly warned villagers not to transport vaccinated pigs, not to consume dead pigs or throw them into running rivers. Comments are closed.
