The Government's move to amend section 145 of the Constitution, relating to a motion of No Confidence vote against the Prime Minister, may be in breach of the law.
Political Analyst with the National Research Institute, Dr. Ray Anere said, the proposed amendment violates the rights of other M-P's, as it restricts them from conducting their duties as set under section 115 of the Constitution, outlining their Parliamentary Privileges and Freedom of Expression. Dr Anere, said with such a move, the M-P's now have the option of lobbying other groups outside of Parliament and challenge the amendment, in the court of law. He adds, such a move indicates P-N-G shifting to a guided democracy. Dr. Anere said, this is unhealthy for P-N-G's Liberal Constitutional Democracy, which must be always protected. He further states, the changes will result in limiting the Prime Minister's post to the ruling party, which is against the current democratic system. Comments are closed.
