A mother and her child are among nine people hospitalized at Mendi Hospital after eating poisonous mushrooms in the Southern Highlands Province.
They are among the latest victims of the prolonged drought in Sumbura village of Southern Highlands. The delay in the distribution of relief food supplies has forced the people to harvest and consume poisonous mushrooms. Former Kagua Erave M-P, Charles Miru says the situation is so severe, that even the food that is distributed is not enough to reach everyone in the district. Kagua has a population of 100-thousand, and this week, 200 rice bags were distributed at Sugu Valley. This area has 14 Council Wards and the food was only distributed to 6 wards and 8 missed out.
