The Bougainville Executive Council, (BEC) has abolished some departments within the Bougainville Administration.
The changes were announced by the head of the BEC, President John Momis in a circular to all departmental heads, constitutional offices and the media this week. Included in this, are the appointments and renewal of departmental heads and the renaming of the departments of the Bougainville Public Service. President Momis said two of the departments to be abolished are the Police and Correctional Service and the Office for Bougainville Referendum. Officers who headed those divisions have also been replaced under these new changes. The former department of Administrative Services now becomes the Department of Personnel Management and Administrative Services while the Department of Justice and the Principal Legal Adviser is now known as the Department of Police, Corrective Services and Justice. The president also announced the establishment of the new department of Referendum, Veterans’ Affairs and Peace to be headed by former president, James Tanis. He further announced that the heads of these departments would now be known as Secretary of departments like the Secretary for Economic Development and so forth.
