The eighth person Jerry Wani in the IMR missing scientists tragedy is believed to be still alive and may hold the key to the mystery of their disappearance according to the findings of the Coronial Inquest.
Coroner Lawrence Kangwia said this should be the starting point in the fresh investigation that should be held by the police. The findings of the inquest state that Jerry Wani’s name appeared in the evidence of many witnesses who gave evidence or produced information at the inquest. He is stated to be a relative of team leader Gibson Gideon who accompanied him around in Kimbe and finally travelled with the others on that fateful journey. He seems to be also known as Tetabe to relatives and later changed his name to Michael. The findings say two persons who work and live at Haella Estate gave evidence as relatives that Wani came from Goroka some months ahead of the anticipated trip and stayed with them and later travelled with the team. On the other hand a number of witnesses stated that Wani was no stranger in Kimbe, having grown up at Gigo settlement as a youngster. He was not a hard-core criminal but had his share of criminal experiences. Mr Kangwia stated that witnesses who knew him well gave evidence that they saw and talked with Wani in Kimbe and Bialla a number of times after the scientists disappeared. When it was discovered that he had travelled with the scientists, they reported the matter to police. The findings say on one occasion police officers conducted a raid upon information given and ended up arresting a different person who was discharged. The inquest had heard that Wani went into hiding but police captured him and discharged him without taking any action. He had given police another name to obtain release. According to witnesses, the Wani that travelled with the scientists was alive and living in and around Kimbe and Bialla. He is said to have married a local woman from the Bialla area. "It therefore demands a thorough investigation by police to apprehend the person held out to be Jerry Wani and then to have all competing witnesses identify him to confirm his identify. He may hold the key to the mystery of the missing persons". PNG Facts/ Post Courier Comments are closed.
