The academic year will resume despite the many unresolved issues faced by the Education Department, Education Minister Hon. Nick Kuman says. He said many of the issues were caused by management problems.
One of the most prominent is the leave fare entitlements for teachers. He assured teachers that they would be paid what they were owed. “I will get all the details and as soon as we establish that, I will go to the National Executive Committee to make sure that we find the money to pay them,” he said. “These are their entitlements and we cannot deny them their rights to be paid their entitlements.” Education Secretary Dr Michael Tapo could not give a time frame for the payment because the government’s financial system was yet to be opened. He said the exact amount to be paid to each province was yet to be established. Meanwhile, Kuman said the standards-based curriculum would be implemented this year starting with Elementary 1 and 2 levels. He said the training of trainers was being held in Enga, Gulf, Central, National Capital District, East Sepik and West New Britain. Minister Hon. Nick Kuman said the aim of a standards-based curriculum was to improve the literacy rate in the country while producing competent students at all education levels.
