A total of K31.5m is needed to provide relief supplies over the next three months for the areas in the Highlands Region severely affected by the drought.
This is according to a preliminary report tabled by an inter-agency assessment team sent into the region to assess the extent of the disaster. Logistics would cost a further K1.6m. The seven highlands provinces are all affected, with food supplies and clean drinking water a top priority for the 3.2 million people. An update of the situation by an assessment team revealed those areas worst hit are now put into category 5, that's very severe. It's estimated almost 1 million families have been affected. Already the National Disaster Centre have distributed food supplies that is expected to continue. The dry weather caused by the effects of the El-Nino weather pattern is expected to reach its peak in the coming months. Meantime, eight districts in the highlands have been categorized as at extreme level 5 disaster, with food and clean drinking water as top priority. The National Disaster Centre Inter-agency Technical Assessment Team deployed to the Highlands region have completed their preliminary reports. A meeting circular released by Chef Secretary Sir Manasupe Zurenuoch last Friday confirmed eight districts are worst affected. They have calculated costs involved and how relief supplies are to be delivered over the next 3 moths. The level 5 areas are Tambul Nebilyer in Western Highlands, Laigap Porgera and Kendep in Enga, Imbongu, Magarima and Ialibu Pangia in Southern Highlands, Gumine and Kundiawa Gembogl in Simbu. Other districts not mentioned are all at category 3.
