People’s Progress Party (PPP) has a new party leader. Former Prime Minister, and New Ireland Province Governor Sir Julius Chan has handed over the party leadership to fellow party member Ben Micah.
Mr Micah is Minister for Public Enterprise and is Kaveing Open member. Today at 11am during a small ceremony, Sir Julius handed over the party reigns to Mr Micah. Sir Julius’ main reason for the transfer of the leadership is his vision is for the party to grow. The news comes at time where the nation is gripped by the warrant of arrest of the Prime Minister. Past prime ministers have called on Mr O’Neill to resign and surrender himself for questioning by the Fraud Squad and Anti-Corruption. And while the National Court has yet to decide the fate of the PM whether he should be arrested or not as per the application bid, suspensions of senior policemen have taken place awaiting investigations. The Prime Minister thinks these men have been compromised. Sir Julius has been quiet of the issue but he is not new to such national issues gripping the country by its throat. Sir Julius voluntarily stood down as Prime Minister during the sandline crisis because of the overwhelming public opinion against him. He believed it was the right thing to do at that time and that confidence was no longer apparent in his leadership. What he did was an honourable thing to do as he believed in demoracy. Today he stepped down as a party leader after 46 years. He formed the party in 1960. Sir Julius was Prime Minister from 1980 to 1982 and 1994 to 1997. Chan’s second government was brought down by the Sandline Affair and the party suffered in the elections that year. Chan and acting Prime Minister John Giheno lost their seats, and Michael Nali became the party’s leader in Parliament. Comments are closed.
