Supporters of former Southern Highlands Provincial Election Manager, David Wakias and police clashed today sending Mendi Town into a stand still. Police had acted on instructions of new Provincial Election Manager, Jacob Kurap, and had cut locks to the electoral office, in search of 24 boxes containing electoral roll updating forms. This action had angered Wakias' supporters who were watching them closely, and a commotion erupted between the two groups. Southern Highlands is yet to start its electoral roll updating exercise, and the work of the new Election Manager, Jacob Kurap was made hard after his predecessor, David Wakias locked the door and took the keys. Jacob Kurap says that, he has instructed the police to use force to get the roll updating materials because the training materials which were locked inside belongs to the state, and also Southern Highlands was way back in roll updating while rest of the country are ahead with data entries now. However, David Wakis’s supporters who were manning the gate of the building stopped the police from entering and a fight broke out. A police vehicle had its wind screen smashed to pieces. The people who were manning the gate of the electoral office wanted the outcome of the court’s decision first which will be heard this Thursday before the materials can be released. However the 24 boxes of materials were not in the electoral office but must have been kept elsewhere. NBC/PNGfacts
