FRESH from maintenance works at the BSE Cairns Slipways, the medical ship YWAM is ready for her maiden voyage to Papua New Guinea.
The 14-year-old catamaran is now a floating hospital boasting dental and surgical facilities. She is entirely staffed by volunteers dedicated to delivering essential medical services in the remote parts of our nearest neighbour. The former cruise ship was purchased in December last year following a successful fundraising campaign that generated $6.5 million in five months. YWAM MSA Community Ambassador, Yolonde Entsch has never been to Papua New Guinea but has campaigned tirelessly since last August. “I got involved after seeing the YWAM video – everyone should watch it, it’s impossible to stop yourself from crying,” she said. “When you see a little baby 1.7kg who’s so thin and sick, knowing that simple medicines we take for granted here are literally the difference between life and death over there, it is devastating. “One in five mothers die in child birth, one in 13 children don’t make it to the age of five, we need to change that.” Last week the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade granted an additional $2 million to assist the mission. The YWAM departs Cairns on Friday. Cairns Post
