For too long, public servants have committed state liabilities that were not budgeted for.
This was the statement made by a disappointed Finance and Education Minister, James Marape today. Minister Marape said individuals have abused the process of awarding contracts, which has caused the recent saga with the Education Department in NCD. The news conference by Finance Minister James Marape was to clear the air concerning the confrontation by NCD contractors at the Fincorp House last week. A vocal Marape stressed that contracts are issued by state agencies and agents when money is available and budgeted for. Minister Marape explained that junior officers from the finance and education department have made these commitments to over 200 contractors ranging between K100, 000 to half a million. He announced that a team from the Finance, Fraud, Auditor General and representatives from the contractors will be tasked to carry out a thorough investigation into this matter. Apart from the investigation, Minister Marape will be issuing a circular instruction to government departments, including provincial administrators on the matter of spending outside allocated budget.
