The long awaited court hearing of former Chairman of the National Provident Fund,Jimmy Maladina is set for trail.
Deputy Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika announced the decision this morning. Justice Salika says the court cannot be dictated by agenda's of lawyers and parties in the case as it has gone on for far to long. The trial is set for the 4th of May. He has instructed parties to appear for a pre-trial conference on the twenty-third of this month to sort themselves out. Justice Salika says the court must now set agenda for itself and must not be dictated by lawyers. Its been a number of years now, since the arrest of Mr Maladina and several others on what is termed' the N-P-F Fraud Saga. Millions of kina belonging to hardworking citizens in the country were allegedly lost through deals made during the construction of Deloittes tower in Down Town Port Moresby between 1997 to 1999. A K5 million kina Waigaini land deal was also said to be fraudulently made. The total amount of money tought to have been lost by the NPF due to mismanagement ammounted to some K170 million kina. Mr Maladina had escaped to Australia to avoid arrest but returned voluntarily and surrendered to police after the government applied for extradition. A Commission of Inquiry was set up to invetigate, and findings were tabled in Parliament by then Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare in 2002. Meantime, Mr Maladina who appeared in person, at the National Court this morning for bail variation was allowed to travel to Australia between now and return back on the nineteenth of this month. This is for him to meet with his daughter's teacher on a parent teacher meeting, and to see some lawyers.
