Parliament must legislate against internet usage to police “free” roaming of pornographic and social media websites in light of the influx of communication companies in Papua New Guinea, says Moresby North-East MP Labi Amaiu.
Amaiu, who appeared concerned standing in the Chamber of Parliament, told Parliament that he had received a lot of complaints from parents that a lot of primary and high school children were among the highest users of mobile phones and were accessing and spending a lot of their time on social media sites like Facebook and pornographic sites “very easily”. “There are a lot of communications companies entering PNG…the state’s company Telikom PNG Ltd and Digicel PNG are providing good service to the people…however, is there any legislation in place to control children from accessing these pornographic sites,” asked the MP. Amaiu said children should not be exposed to such evils and that there should be control measures in place that would protect them. Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jim Miringtoro said NICTA, the State’s authority on all matters of communication and information technology, under the NICTA Act was looking at sim card registrations and would in the current sitting of Parliament introduce a Bill to legislate on Cyber Crime. He told Parliament and Amaiu that right after today’s session he would inform NICTA officials to furnish him with a report which he will present in Parliament immediately.
