The office of Metropolitan Superintrndent of Lae City has been approached by Student Leaders of Unitech. They have requested, in writing to hold an Awareness campaign at Eriku Oval tomorrow commencing at 11am and finishing at 2pm. My senior officers and I have been in dialogue with student reps as of last Monday and we have been cooperating well in this current issue, to avoid any form of violence or disorder in the community. I praise the University of Technology students for their behaviour and conduct so far. I have granted approval for the awareness to take place, and have also advised them of certain issues which maybe contemptuos if mentioned in public. My decision is in light of growing tension which may erupt if we continue to have the students on lock down in the campus. I must make it clear, that this is not a Protest March! This is an awareness. Approval has been given to only Unitech Students to conduct Awareness at the Eriku Oval for a specified amount of time. By 2pm all students should be at the campus. There will be no walking, students will be transported on vehicles under police escort. This is not a public forum. Only student leaders will conduct awareness and no one else. No outsiders, meaning, concerned members of the public, politicians, aspiring politicians or community leaders will be allowed to talk. This is the arrangment which has been made by the Student Leaders and agreed to by Police. I want to warn opportunists, that all Police manpower in Lae has been utilised. We will not allow any disruptions to business in Lae City. I urge all residents to go about their normal business as the awareness will be held at Eriku and will be guarded by Police. We have all parts of the City covered for anyone or groups of people who want to take advantage of the situation and loot or damage properties. Anyone who does this will be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Let me emphasise strongly, this is not a protest march. It is a well coordinated awareness and security for the public and students will be at its highest. The students have arranged and will announce handing presenting of the petition to most likely Governor of Morobe. Their leaders will make the announcment and will communicate the same to me. My business is to maintain public safety and that is what Police in Lae is doing. I expect the same cooperation from the student body.
