A women leader in Kaintiba is appealing for immediate police presence in the area.
Acting president of the Provincial Council of Women, Odetter Banakato, says since the transfer of a regular policeman to Kerema some years ago, community based constables have been mistreating the people by imposing heavy police bails. Mrs. Banakato says there are incidences when people come in conflict with the law, that these Community Constables employ heavy handed tactics by assaulting the suspects. Banakato is appealing to the Provincial Police Commander Lincoln Gerari, to permanently post up to two regular police officers, to ensure general policing duties are performed according to law. According to PPC Gerari, there is no proper law in place to employ community based constables, but he says the Village Court Act, allows for peace officers to maintain law at the village, and this is where community based constables can be inserted.
