A lot of work has to be done in cleaning up the Ministry of the Labour and Industrial relations this was revealed by the Minister of Labour and Industrial relations Benjamin Poponawa in response to Oro Governor Garry Juffa’s question if there is and enforcement arm to carry out investigations inspection and prosecution on foreigners living and working in the country. Minister of Labour and Industrial relations Benjamin Poponawa stated that it is a concern and there is an enforcement division within his department and in other provinces however capacity and enforcement is the issue as there is a need of assistance with government agencies to work together and cooperate with the Department of Labour and Industry. “Labour only cannot fix this problem overnight we need all government departments and all our leaders to work together and I have instructed my deputy that all new work permits I have to see them and my good governor I am Papua New Guinean I will not let us down” stated Mr Poponawa. Almost 90 percent of the foreigners employed in ORO do not speak English and yet conduct businesses, while this is a common problem nationwide all foreigners have valid work permits and continue to conduct business in the country for years.
