Gulf Governor, Havila Kavo, has been found guilty by the National Court, for misappropriation.
Deputy Chief Justice, Sir Gibbs Salika made the ruling this morning, in front of a packed court room. Governor Kavo was found to have received allowances totaling K131,000, that was paid out from a K10 million Memorandum of Agreement funds released in 2010. The monies were held in trust for impact projects in Kikori district for those communities close to the oil pipe lines. Court documents show, the Gulf Provincial Executive Council chaired by Mr Kavo agreed to pay his allowance, plus K1,000 to individuals who facilitated the payments for overtime. Sir Gibss said, he was satisfied beyond doubt that trust funds are for special projects, and the monies were MOA funds. He told the Governor, what he and the provincial government had done was wrong as they are custodians of public monies. Mr Kavo will return back to court on October sixth. A means assessment report will also be prepared to see weather the governor is able to repay the money. Kikori M-P, Mark Maipakai was the complainant in the matter. Comments are closed.
