MONEY raised by Port Moresby restaurant, Kopitiam last weekend for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines was yesterday handed to the Filipino Association of Papua New Guinea (FAPNG).
A total of K39,218.80 was handed over by Nambawan Trophy Ltd’s (NWTL) group corporate sales manager Kila Karo to FAPNG president Roel Sta Cruz at the Sea View Restaurant at Ela Beach. Kopitiam, a subsidiary of NWTL, joined hands with the public and the Filipino community in the national capital to donate all their takings at the eatery last Saturday and Sunday. While most of the money was raised through people eager to eat there to show their support, late donations were from people who dropped in to hand over cheques and cash. Cruz said Kopitiam had created goodwill which was being emulated by other companies in the country that were doing the same for people in the Philippines. He said while the number of deaths had been estimated to be around the 10,000 mark, there were about 200,000 people left homeless. First secretary and consul of the Philippines Embassy Pablito Mendoza was at hand to witness the handover. He said the embassy appreciated the efforts of all those who donated towards the recovery process. The amount would translate to more than half a million pesos. About 20,000 Filipinos live and work in PNG and some have families who have been affected by the devastation. The National Comments are closed.
