East New Britain Governor Ereman ToBaining Jnr has condemned the act of stealing at a popular hotelier last Sunday morning.
The Tongan womens soccer team fell victim to suspects who stole their used soccer jerseys and boots during the early hours last Sunday morning while they were asleep. The team were in Kokopo taking part in the Oceania Football Championships. They were accomodated at Queen Lodge. Mr ToBaining Jnr hit out at the criminals saying such action was very disgraceful, especially when the government was doing its best to promote tourism in the province while a few people try to tarnish the hard word put in to promote Kokopo as a tourism hub of PNG. He called on the community leaders in the surrounding villages to work together with police to have the culprits arrested. He also called on the ward members and village elders in Kokopo to work together with his government to strive and maintain the good name of Kokopo. He said that such action would not be tolerated and called on the police to clamp down hard and have those responsible, arrested. Mr ToBaining Jnr said it was a shame that Kokopo town was getting special attention and interest by the government and a few people were out to spoil the good name which it is known for. He also called on all hoteliers in town to employ, smart, alert and very professional security guards in protect and watch over their properties. Governor ToBaining Jnr on behalf of the people of East New Britain province apologised to the visiting team for suffering at the hands of a few lazy opportunists who do not have better things to do. He also assured visitors that despite such setback, Kokopo remains the best tourist destination in the country and will welcome visitors to its shores any time. He said this was very unfortunate but assured tourists that Kokopo remains a peaceful and safe town with friendly hospitality. Meanwhile, Kokopo police have.attested a suspect while he was trying to sell a pair of boots to females players at Kalabond field. The suspect is detained at the Kokopo police cells. The team lost18 uniform shirts, two soccer boots, four soccer balls and esky. The team had left their used jersey shirts which had been washed to hang outside their rooms.
