The Government has brushed aside claims by Lae Port workers and landowners that its awarded contracts to international companies to manage Port and Stevedoring Services at the Lae Tidal Basin wharf and Motukea wharf, outside Port Moresby.
Minister for State Investments, Ben Micah, in a statement, says there is no such thing. The Minister's clarification follows a report in last week's daily's, which implied that the Port and Stevedoring Services at Lae, has been won by a Filipino company I-C-T-S-I. He says PNG Ports has short-listed a number of companies already. The paper also reported that strike action by the port workers in Port Moresby and Lae came about because of the awarding of contracts to international companies. Micah however clarifies PNG Ports Limited has shortlisted a number of companies who responded to the international expression of interest advertisements. These companies will be requested to submit their bids of terminal operated jobs. He said the two projects are of international standards and of significant value to the intention by the government to make PNG an international shipping hub, connecting Asia to the Pacific and Australia and New Zealand. Companies who win the bids will be obliged to work in partnership with landowner companies not only in stevedoring but in many other business spin off benefits as well.
