The people of Alotau in the Milne Bay Province are still awaiting assistance by the government to assist in the recovery following “Cyclone Ita.”
According to the Provincial Disaster Coordinator, Eric Balaria, the sum of K6million which was given by the Prime Minister for assist the people of Alotau, is still parked within the Treasury Department and currently the Disaster Office in Alotau that is leading the recovery process, has not received anything yet from these funds. “Last month we completed the first phase of the disaster appeal where we supplied food, water and clothing to the communities affected.” He said that last week all the supplies had finished and he and his team have verbally asked the National Disaster Center in Port Moresby for a further K100, 000 funding to carry out the supply of assistance throughout the communities in the coming week. For now he says, “We are waiting patiently for Treasury to release funds from the K6million so that we can fully restore the displaced communities in Alotau affected by the effects of Cyclone Ita.” PNG Facts/ PNG Village Comments are closed.
