Papua New Guinea's Goroka MP Bire Kimisopa has called on the Government to stop the employment of technical expatriate workers and remove those already in Papua New Guinea. “We have to be racists enough to understand that this country is ours and the jobs that we create and award, we have to insist that our people take up all these jobs,” he told Parliament on Friday. “You and I cannot go to China or Australia and seek employment in any technical fields there but in this country we employ technical expatriates.” Kimisopa said during the grievance debate that he was concerned about the lack of employment opportunities in the technical field for locals. “I believe we missed the golden opportunity when we launched the LNG project and the 15th Pacific Games despite giving an enormous public investment,” he said. “Providing employment for our people will be the greatest challenge for this parliament.” Kimisopa said the onus was for the political leaders to create a middle class in PNG. “In terms of the middle class, I am referring to Papua New Guineans earning about K50,000 to K250,000 per annum. We have to create a middle class so that they can become the next wave of employers in this country.” Kimisopa said that many locals were seeking technical jobs that were being occupied by foreigners.
