The PNG Defence Force will be taking tough disciplinary action against the soldiers that assaulted ( Sepik) students from Kila Kila Secondary School at a school cultural show over the weekend in Port Moresby.
That’s the assurance given by the Army’s Chief of Staff, Colonel Mark Goina after five of the soldiers responsible for the incident were identified. “It is still not clear as to how many soldiers exactly were involved, but I’m confident the rest will be identified following the investigation that is currently taking place into the incident,” says Goina. He adds that the Army is adamant in changing its image in the country and will thoroughly deal with soldiers who will spoil the good name the army is trying to restore. Most of the students assaulted are the children of soldiers based in Taurama Barracks and the soldiers responsible are from Murray Barracks. Goina says the reason for the assault it is not clear at this time, but according to a parent the assault resulted from an earlier incident on Friday night were a group of students attacked a group of soldiers in retaliation for them attacking one of their friends. That incident took place at Taurama Barracks when the students were camping out in preparation to perform at their Cultural Show on Saturday at the Coronation Primary School.
