Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says Port Moresby will receive the first 25 megawatts of power or electricity supply before June as the country prepares to host Pacific island nations for the 2015 Games and other international events like the APEC Meeting.
The Prime Minister says this will give enough electricity for residents and visitors. This will ensure no interruptions happen during the Games that will be held in July and other international events. “The last thing we want is to embarrass ourselves when blackouts happen during track and field events,” O’Neill says. The PM explained in parliament that this supply of power is a result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the State and ExxonMobil for the supply of gas to produce 75 megawatts power to Port Moresby and 40 megawatts to Hela Province. PM O’Neill says under the Umbrella Benefit Sharing agreement there was nothing under domestic market obligation and as a result all the gas produced are exported to customers overseas. He says this leaves PNG with nothing. “Knowing that PNG Power is running out of capacity to produce stable and consistent supply of power to residents of many parts of the country especially in Port Moresby, Lae and other major towns, we needed to encourage the LNG project to provide the country with access to gas,” O’Neill says. He says it is a much welcome relief to residents. He said before the end of the year ExxonMobil will supply a further 50 megawatts of power. “Power will be much cheaper, its cost will come down as low as the fuel. So we are encouraging PNG Power to pass on this savings to residents,” says O’Neill. PNGFacts/PNGLOOP
