Four Departmental Heads including Chief Migration Officer, Mataio Rabura, appeared before Justice David Cannings at the Waigani National Court, this morning. Justice Cannings ordered the four departmental heads to appear, as he takes personal interest into the abuses in the Manus asylum detention center on humanitarian grounds. The others include Chief Government Secretary, Sir Manasupe Zurenuoc, Foreign Affairs Secretary, Bill Dim, Attorney General's Dr Lawrence Kalinoe and Public Solicitor, Frazer Pitpit. The four were given notice to appear and were represented by lawyer Peter Kuman. Judge Cannings used section 57 of the Constitution that provides for the National Court to inquire into and protect guaranteed rights and freedoms of people to establish the inquiry. The judge indicated a time frame of one month in which proceedings will take place at Madang, Manus and Port Moresby. The court will also visit the Asylum Center and give opportunity for the transferees to be heard on their treatment. Opposition Leader Belden Namah has indicated his interest in the case to join as party which will be decided tomorrow. PNG Facts/ NBC News Comments are closed.
