Minister for Foreign Affairs and Immigration Rimbink Pato has welcomed the re-starting of the foreign service training in the Department of Foreign Affairs, with the support of New Zealand.
An agreement to this effect was signed by the chief executive officer of the New Zealand Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade, John Allen, the Vice-Chancellor of the Victoria University of Wellington, Professor Grant Guildford, and the acting Secretary for Foreign Affairs William Dihm in Wellington last Friday. PNG’s acting High Commissioner to New Zealand Morea Veratau also attended with senior officials from all the organisations involved. Minister Pato said the first group of 31 trainees will leave for New Zealand later this month. "Consistent with a whole-of-government approach in growing Papua New Guinea’s connections in a globalising world, the group will include staff from the Department of Foreign Affairs as well as other government agencies," Minister Pato said. "These include the Department of the Prime Minister and National Executive Council, and the Immigration and Citizenship service.” He said staff from other departments are expected to be involved in future. "The training program has been agreed follow a series of studies and discussions with experienced officials from the New Zealand Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the School of Government at Victoria University, Wellington," he said. "The first module will deal with the important topic of diplomatic communications. Other modules dealing with different aspects of Foreign service work will follow after. They will build on induction and bridging courses provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs to help trainees prepare for the New Zealand-supported program." Comments are closed.
